We got out of Maine early, as the mist and rain was relentless. It rained pretty hard at times last night, and the seems don't like to keep water out of the cheaper tents. We awoke in a couple of puddles (I still need to scotchguard the seams on this tent) but nothing to severe? What was worse, is that it was still raining when we tried to break down camp. We figured we'd just throw all the stuff in the van and go to Salem, then head to the campground to dry out--yeah, that didn't happen.
It was a 4.5 hour drive to Boston Campground at Wompatuck, located in Hingham, about 20mi south of Boston. The first stop we made was about two hours in (we like to stop every 2 hours to rest our legs and stretch em out a little bit. This point of the trip was a stop in Freeport, ME, at the city block long LL Bean original store. Freeport has turned into an outlet mall of sorts, so obviously the ladies had to hit the shops. Avery ended up buying an LL Bean sweater for the weather up here. We checked out the North Face store which had some really good deals, but, not wanting to kill the budget, opted to buy some other day.
We ate at Amato's restaurant and shared a pizza. Avery is beginning to eat like a grown up--she ate Subs with tomatoes in PA, and now had tomatoes on her pizza with our garlic chicken and spinach. Big guuuuurl. ha.
On we went to Salem to visit and learn about the house of the seven gables. I was able to text a friend whom we shared a common likeness with on Instagram from the #30daysofbiking days, Tam Cronin. Luckily after a couple of failed texts and e-mails, I was able to get in touch with her as she lived nearby. She met us after our tour and, bonus, showed us around Salem. We walked around graveyards (a common sight in the Northeast) and she showed us the maritime Historical sights too. We had coffee from our @coffeeneuring sharing days and then we parted ways. She was so awesome to talk to and it just reminded me that there are awesome people in the world--don't abandon hope just yet. You know what they say anyway. Facebook makes you hate people you already know, while Instagram and Twitter makes you love people you never met. This couldn't be more true.

Boston Stop
We decided, after seeing a rain forecast for Sunday at 80% rain to stop in Boston before we set camp at Wompatuck. Yes, drive into Boston. Why not. Tam said traffic wasn't overly horrible on the weekends, so we gave it a shot. There was some tenseness going in, and after spending about $15 in tolls ($4 for making a wrong turn and having to go back thru the tunnel) we made it. Parked near boston commons in a parking garage. Funny thing in Boston, was that although the garage seemed above ground, we were actually UNDER the commons. We couldn't find our car after walking half the freedom trail, and noticed a little shed that said Garage. Avery was sure we came out of it but it didn't make sense for me and Jen. Sure enough, it was our ticket to our car. We felt so dum. Good to have this kid around to navigate once in a while. Avery fell in love with Boston, as I think we all did. Walked as much of the Freedom trail as we could before heading to Wompatuck, with a quick dinner and beer at Hennessey's. We wanted to go to the Oyster house, but the line was long and we were on a schedule.
We pulled into Wompatuck Campground at around 945 pm. It was dark, and the mist was rolling in, along with the rain that was forecasted for tomorrow. We set up camp, Jen and Avery grabbed a shower (with little hot water) and called it a night. Looking forward to Boston some more tomorrow, and yes, i'm driving in now that I've experienced it a little bit to hopefully get in some more sights and, hopefully a Red Sox game from the cheap seats! Grammy, this is what we're spending your donation on!
