DAY 2- JULY 2, 2016
We decided on this trip that we'll fly by the seat of our pants sometimes, and since it was on the way (kinda), we decided to go to visit the Gettysburg battlefield and National Park. This place was massive. After searching a while for a parking spot (it is the 4th of July weekend, dummy--nice call) we finally went to the visitor center to see what we were in for. After deciding against the 24 mile automobile tour (because an extra 2-4 hours in a vehicle was just what we wanted), we opted to stretch our legs and walk to a couple of key highlighted areas. The battlefield, and the National Cemetery. It was a great walk uphill, about 2 miles total. I'm glad I've been practicing by walking at least a mile everyday since early February. The hills were a nice change to my daily flatland walk.
After hiking the path we noticed the battlefield, and all the monuments in the background. Avery took pics of the amazing pistol and long gun artifact collection in the museum (no backpacks allowed inside) so we took turns, making what should have been a longer visit to the museum a shorter one. I just didn't want to leave my backpack in the car and possibly lose all my camera stuff. That kind of thing is just too important on trips like these--so yeah, i was a little stubborn.

After a few hours in Gettysburg, we finished up the trip to our first destination. The Riverside sub shop--before we ever go anywhere else, we need to get our fill of hoagie heaven and stop here. Jen was an ordering rookie and forgot to order 'cosmo' so they weren't heated, but the subs were still excellent. I'm sure we'll have more opportunities to eat heated subs in the three days that we'll be in town :)
We got our fill and finished our trip at Vicki and Dave's new 1925 bungalow style house, just blocks from Lamade stadium. Spent the rest of the evening sitting on the front porch, drinking a few beers and catching up on the previous year's adventures. Oh yeah, it was bout 65 degrees outside. A big difference from the 90's with 80 percent humidity we've been experiencing in the south! Exhausted from the day's events we slept soundly and went to bed early, looking forward to Sunday's activities with the Lutz family/July 4 celebration at the cabin on the creek.
